the refracted mosaic of overflowing life
here is army green
the sky fills with the rising ranks
from the foothold held by battered spitfires
and the household heroism of those behind
where now the waves of the sea can follow
men quiet in the grim grey
beneath their coming death
and the eyes of the world upon them
courage made flesh in their trembling hands
every gasping breath, each broken step
every drop of the blood pooled on the beaches
precious and gathered to the sanctuary
to the simple wooden cup
it was always a mission with a death wish
to stand in the endless storm
to fight still as London burns
but the crowds will dance yet
and overflow Trafalgar Square
though hidden yet in the garden
the victory will come
